2025 Kia Sonet: There’s no denying that the compact SUV segment has turned into a battleground here in India, but Kia refuses to be brushed aside with the Sonet—a sub-4-meter SUV that packs a promising punch in terms of styling, features and driving appeal.
For 2025, Kia now brings a heavily updated version of the Sonet and tries to address the few shortcomings which ailed the earlier model.
With sharper looks, improved safety, and even more tech, the 2025 Kia Sonet sets out to offer a more youthful proposition that falls closer to the design end of the form and function spectrum.
It still goes up against the Hyundai Venue, Maruti Brezza, Tata Nexon and the Mahindra XUV 3XO - all of which do well in their own right.
2025 Kia Sonet BOLD WITH A TWIST
The 2025 Sonet isn’t markedly dissimilar from its predecessor, but its new look suits it. The new tiger-nose grille, reworked LED headlamps, as well as the newly designed DRLs ensure the front fascia appears sportier.
New connected light bar in tail-lamps for modern appeal and better road presence at night.
The new dual-tone colour options, sharp looking alloys and tasteful chrome add ons imbue that sporty, upmarket feel to the Sonet. It is suitable for even the busiest urban area as it is stable and well proportioned for an SUV of its size—hence why it has sustained its popularity in city locations.
A Cabin That Feels a Tier Above
The interior of the 2025 Sonet is an improvement by Kia. The design hasn’t necessarily been reinvented; it’s just been packed with new materials, upholstery options and layout. The cabin is relatively plush for the money, and the ergonomics are still spot-on.
The handsome fully digital instrument cluster and big 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system are easy to read and react quickly.
Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard, and connected car functionality is tied to Kia Connect, affording remote engine start, climate control and real-time tracking via a smartphone app.
The front seats are well bolstered and the rear seat comfort has been improved with cushier cushioning and its own set of AC vents. But the back seat continues to be more comfortable for two adults than for three.
Powertrain Choices and Performance
The Sonet still comes with three engine choices:
A naturally aspirated petrol with a 5-speed manual gearbox has been provided with a 1.2 litre capacity.
A 1.0L turbo-petrol with iMT and a 7-speed DCT
A 6-speed iMT or torque converter automatic with a 1.5L diesel
The 1.2L petrol is good for city runabouts and the 1.0L turbo provides spirited performance, especially with the DCT. For long distance driving, the diesel remains a punchy consistent choice for those wanting power and fuel economy.
The ride quality is slightly towards liberal, and the suspension swallows up all but the worst of bumps at urban speeds. The steering is light, great for city driving, but it weights up at speed for improved confidence.
Safety and Features
Kia has really upped its game in safety. Standard safety equipment on the 2025 Sonet across all variants includes six airbags, while ESC, hill-start assist, TPMS and ISOFIX mounts are also standard fare.
Top-spec models gain a 360-degree camera, plus ADAS Level 1 features including forward collision warning and lane departure warnings, and front parking sensors.
Other features in the Sonet include ventilated front seats, air purifier, sunroof, ambient lighting and a high-end Bose sound system on higher trims, which once again, makes the Sonet one of the most feature-loaded SUV in its segment.
Pros:
Rugged design with refreshed lighting and grille
Various engines/gearboxes
There’s also plenty of class-leading features and connected tech
Automatic with a diesel option available
Durable safety package: 6 airbags and ADAS
Cons:
Rear seat is great for two adults, but don’t try to trick three people into thinking it’s comfortable back there.
1.2L petrol engine is sluggish on highways
Turbo- petrol DCT variants marginally pricey.
Can’t have all-wheel-drive…or terrain modes
Sometimes touche screen interface can be slow.
2025 Kia Sonet Final Verdict
The 2025 Kia Sonet is still one of the sweetest all-rounder compact SUV offerings in India. It’s one with a fresher appearance, more potent safety technology and better features, making it attractive to first-car buyers and people moving up from a small hatchback.
It’s not ideal, but in value, practicality and relevance to today’s buyers the Sonet is the sweet spot.
